PURPOSE OF SLS
People may think that SLS is not safe and should be avoided at all cost. However, it is not entirely as bad as one may think it to be. Let us look at some of the purposes of having SLS in your soaps.
01.
Cleaning properties
For the most part, SLS is often used as a cleaning property. Hence, you will often find it in soaps. In short, SLS may be called as sulfate sometimes and is a kind of anionic surfactant. That is an ingredient that reduces surface tension between oil and water and allows dirt and other particles to wash away clean.
02.
Foaming agent
One of the common property of SLSs is that it acts as a foaming agent. On top of its strong cleaning properties, manufacturers often use SLS as a foaming agent. It creates the rich lather people so enjoy in shampoos and soaps.
As early as the 1930s, SLS has been used in many body care products, beauty products, and household cleaners.
USING SLS PRODUCTS SAFELY
As many household products contain SLS, many people will question whether if it is safe to use the products on a long term basis. Though that concern is valid, the amount of SLS varies between products to products. Oftentimes, the amount of SLS in these products are kept at a minimal level.
Most cosmetic products will have SLS levels ranging anywhere between 0.01% to 50%. Cleaning products will have SLS levels ranging between 1% to 30%.
However, if you rinse off the product as soon as it comes into contact with your skin or have minimal contact with it, your skin will be fine. If your skin reacts strongly against the product, do consult a doctor as soon as you can.
SLS FREE SOAP BASE
SLS free generally means that the soap or product does not include SLS in it. Most manufacturers try to make their products safer and milder by attaching the label “SLS free” on their products.
Although the product may not contain SLS, it may still contain other products and chemicals that can be potentially dangerous for you. A lot of other soaps do contain elements that functions the same as SLSs and may not be as safe for you as you thought it to be. In reality, if you aim to be chemical-free, then you will have to avoid shampoos and soaps entirely.
With or without SLS in your products, your skin will be safe nonetheless as most soaps have minimal SLSs in it.
